Hour in Review — 2026-11-02 16:00 UTC 27 sources
Two threads dominated the hour. The first was Iran. Supreme Leader Khamenei authorized the government to pursue talks on the war 1, and oil fell more than 6% as supply fears eased, undoing part of last week's gains 2,3. Global stocks and bonds rose on US-Iran hopes 4, gold recovered as oil tumbled 5, and US equities, led by tech, advanced as cheaper oil gave relief after an AI-led selloff 6. The second thread was the AI money machine, which showed both its scale and its strain. Anthropic's amended S-1 shows Q3 revenue of $16.96 billion but a $567 million operating loss, driven mainly by $5.0 billion of short-term compute and a $2.0 billion non-cash charge 7. It also shows a $23.3 billion net loss 8 and purchase commitments of $895.4 billion 9. In the same hour, Oracle moved to raise $20 billion, split between $10 billion in stock and $10 billion in bonds, to fund AI 10, and Marvell agreed to a $115 billion Lumentum deal aimed at AI data centers 11. Warnings ran alongside the deals. BofA said a prolonged AI-stock pullback would seriously threaten the global economy 12, the credit chief at Canada's largest pension called the AI financing rush bubble-like 13, and Amazon's free cash flow turned negative at $42.4 billion as AI costs rose 14. That backdrop carries into Tuesday's midterms, where 41 local data-center ballot measures are on the line 12. Trump's disapproval hit a record 60% in an NBC poll 15, Elon Musk has spent a record $474 million on the cycle 16, and Abdul El-Sayed's Michigan campaign reported over $2.4 million from more than 65,000 donors in one day 17. Separately, cyber disruption to real-world systems was a recurring theme. Supermarket freezers in Sweden, Belgium, Ireland and Estonia hit 55C after a cyberattack 18, following earlier incidents at US military bases 19. Fake imminent-nuclear-strike alerts also reached people in Kyiv and Moscow after civil defence apps were reportedly hacked 20,21. In crypto, the FBI blamed North Korea for the roughly $6.3 billion Binance theft, carried out via a compromised employee laptop, though Trump says Pyongyang's involvement is unproven; about $3 billion has been frozen 22. Binance has since seen $4.7 billion in net outflows 23,24, and Brazil's Mercado Bitcoin paused withdrawals after over $40 million in suspicious transfers 25,26. Also not to miss: Spanish investigators published a preliminary report on the Urda high-speed collision that killed 69 27.
